Time & Location 16 January 2026, 09:30 – 16:00 Liss Triangle Centre, Mill Rd, Liss GU33 7DX, UK About Alison Butler is the owner of Blooming Designs. As well as a textile designer, artist and illustrator in her own right, she organises and runs art workshops and Art in the Barn, a twice-yearly creative arts week. Alison graduated from Loughborough University in 1990 with a degree in printed textiles. In partnership with a fellow student, they set up Blooming Designs and built a successful business selling textile prints to leading high street fashion chains both in the UK and Internationally. Influenced by freewheeling illustrators such as Quentin Blake, their designs were sold predominantly to the children’s wear market. With a creative flare that is not limited to textiles alone, Alison has also worked with a number of companies to produce large-scale backdrops for corporate events and theatre productions. Batik is an ancient textile technique originating in Indonesia and its use then spread to many other countries, with each putting a different cultural slant on the choice of images and their outcomes. The pattern was traditionally applied onto cloth using molten wax with fine brushes or tools called tjantings, which are copper vessels with a small spout that the wax flows out from to create a lovely fluid line. Coloured dyes are then applied to the fabric. As a successful textile designer, Alison Butler has used this process on paper, to create highly original and decorative textile designs for the fashion industry. In this workshop, you will start by creating a range of smaller experimental samples and unique outcomes on different papers. This will enable you to explore the process and gain confidence with your skills, before creating a larger final piece. Batik is a dyeing technique that uses wax-resist to create patterns on fabric. The process involves applying melted wax to a cloth, then dyeing the fabric, with the wax preventing the dye from penetrating the fabric in those areas. This results in a design with contrasting colours and unique patterns. This workshop is suitable for those with a range of skills and creative experiences, from beginners to those looking to improve and extend their batik skills. www.bloomingdesigns.com To book and pay for a place on this workshop please use the orange "Book Now" button, above these "Event Details".
